There are many ways to get involved in HPAC – whether volunteering for a one-day park stewardship event, participating on one of our many committees, or attending one of our monthly advisory council meetings.

Upcoming Volunteer Events

Stewardship Committee

The HPAC Stewardship Committee develops and operates activities at all five parks that promote the care, maintenance and beatification of its natural and garden areas. parks. Examples of committee tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Oversight of the design, planting, weeding and watering of gardens and containers in the five parks.

  • Coordinate of service days as needed at the five parks, including Earth Day, River Day, It’s My Park Day, and other clean and green events

  • Recruit and mentor stewards and other volunteers to ensure seasonal as well as long term beautification and tending

  • Integrate volunteer greening activities with the Chicago Park District, following protocols

  • Advocate for tree planting and tree maintenance at all five parks

  • Look for opportunities to make capital or high-impact stewardship projects for park enhancement, volunteer recruitment or promotion

  • Seek partnerships with community organizations to further advance the stewardship goals of the Horner Park Advisory Council

Stewardship events include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Litter removal

  • Tree mulching

  • Tree planting

  • Garden planting, weeding and watering

  • Invasive plant removal

  • Fibar playground surfacing

Concerts Committee

The HPAC Summer Concerts Committee plans an annual series of concerts in Horner Park and in HPAC’s neighborhood parks (Ravenswood Manor, Jacob, Sunken Gardens). Concerts are held throughout the summer and are free to the public. The Committee is responsible for planning the concerts, as well as the day-of logistics to produce them. A program book is produced each year to highlight sponsors and subscribers who have made the series possible.

Volunteers may be asked to:

  • Assist with concert marketing and fundraising efforts

  • Assist at concerts with logistics and operations

  • Assist with production and distribution of the program book

  • Attend periodic committee meetings

Dog Friendly Area (DFA) Committee

DFA committee members work to develop and maintain a dog park in Horner Park. Volunteers are needed to help with the following:

  • develop and execute fundraising ideas and events

  • assist with park cleanup and maintenance

Communications Committee

The goal of the communications committee is to share HPAC updates, activities and events with the surrounding community. Volunteers may be asked to:

  • Monitor and share relevant social media posts from the Chicago Park District, other committees (e.g., the DFA), and other relevant organizations

  • Create original social media posts, including writing copy and taking photos

  • Monitor HPAC social media to answer questions and address any concerns

  • Create and/or update content for the HPAC website

  • Create and send email blasts in Mailchimp

At the moment the communications committee does not have meetings, but handles all tasks via email. Please contact stewardship@hornerpark.org for more information, and to get involved.

Farmers Market Committee

The HPAC Horner Park Farmers Market Committee runs the annual Horner Park Farmers Market. The Market is held Saturdays, June-October with a variety of farms and vendors participating. The Committee is responsible for the planning, marketing, and execution of the Market. Each season, the Committee seeks volunteers to help with each market day.

Market-day volunteers may be asked to:

  • Assist with setup/takedown of HPFM market booth.

  • Assist vendors with their setup/takedown.

  • Assist with market cleanup.

  • Assist market shoppers with any questions.
