In 2018, HPAC applied for the initial grant to create a Nature Play Space at Horner Park with community planning sessions in 2019 to identify suitable areas in the park for the project. Horner Park was determined to support two nature play spaces—green space east of the large playground, and a location near the Belle Plaine park entrance. Both sites were considered viable and HPAC decided to explore Nature Play Spaces in both locations. Due to funding, the site south of Belle Plaine became the most viable site to move forward.
In 2023, the Chicago Park District in partnership with HPAC and funding from the 33rd Ward Participatory Budget, completed the “South Woods” Nature Play Space in Horner Park. The environment combines native plantings, natural materials and some whimsical robots welcoming children to explore, build, learn and play.
Now in 2024, The Horner Park Advisory Council is in the research phase to develop the second Nature Play Space at Horner Park called the “North Woods”. The project would tie together several areas of the park just south of the main fieldhouse including the existing playground and the nature area at the southeast side of the fieldhouse. We’re seeking additional funds so we can complete the full design concept. The play space will again combine native plantings and natural materials to create an interactive space for kids to enjoy. What is a Nature Play Space?
Nature Play Spaces are places for communities to have positive, hands-on experiences
in nature. They’re designed with elements of nature that can be manipulated and
moved. Each space is a collaborative community effort, unique to the ecology of the site
and the needs of the residents. Designing, planting, building, and caring for a Nature
Play Space is an ongoing creative project.
Where will the Nature Play Space be?
The “North Woods” site is just east of the playground and south of the main fieldhouse at Horner Park.
When will the project start and how long will it take?
The North Woods project is in the nascent stages at this time. After initial planning and pricing, the project will be taken up with the park district and 33rd Ward for approval and funding. The project will evolve over several years, so it is never completely finished.
