Join John Friedmann, VP Environment at the North River Commission for an informative presentation on all the exciting new recreational projects planned for our community.

Speakers and Topics:

David St. Pierre, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) will present the results of MWRD initiatives to improve water quality on the North Branch of the Chicago River, DNA analysis of what’s still polluting the river and where, his contention and proof that the river is now clean enough for swimming and an update on local MWRD projects including the Foster Ave diversion tunnel and the updated schedule for completion of the deep tunnel (TARP) project.

Matthew Freer from the Chicago Park District and Jason Zylka from the US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) will discuss exciting new infrastructure projects scheduled for Ronan, Legion and River Parks, the completion of the Horner Park riverbank restoration and how the scheduled removal of the old spillway in River Park will impact the fishery and recreational potential of the North Branch of the Chicago River upstream in Albany Park.

Michael Dugan, Tree Planting Manager, Openlands, will explain how neighbors can get new parkway trees at little to no cost. With tens of thousands of city ash trees lost to the Emerald Ash Borer infestation and budget dollars very tight at city hall, this may be the best opportunity to get new trees. Applications are being taken now for fall plantings.

Steve Simmons, Trail Advocacy Manager, Active Transportation Alliance, will update us on the extensive NRC-area bicycle trail network, present and planned. This is an exciting time for the cycling community.

Brian Daly from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) will provide an update on the CMAP North River Communities Project with its vision and futuristic plan for our community.
