Horner Park Advisory Council
Meeting Minutes
Jerry Giese, President, called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m. Larry Brown acted as secretary for this meeting.
Previous Minutes: August minutes were passed by acclamation.
Treasurer’s Report: Elaine Taylor delivered the Treasurer’s report. The balances are as follows:
- Checking Account: 2,845.79
- Savings Account: 4,142.76
- CD’s 0
- Totals $ 6,988.55
Elaine reported that the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency Grant application had been submitted. The council in conjunction with the CPD will work to use this grant to restore some of the missing trees in front of the Henry Horner monument.
Announcements: Registration for Fall classes at Horner Park will be on Saturday, September 22, 2003. Horner Park will be holding their annual Pumpkin Patch again this year the weekend before Halloween.
Council Business: The council has asked the Horner Park staff to contact Gordon Tech High School and Mary Van Haften from the CPD in an effort to have them attend the October meeting. At a previous meeting Gordon Tech’s representatives had agreed to attend one of our fall meetings annually. Mary Van Haften had previously agreed to attend our September meeting but was unable to attend.
Concert Committee: Larry Brown was happy to report yet another successful year for the concert committee. The concerts were well attended and attendees are enjoying the expanded base of entertainment. Once again the concert budget was slightly in the black. We will again try next year to increase the budget which continues to grow. This years budget exceeded ten thousand dollars.
Garden Committee: Susie Novak reported that she has been spreading her time in all the parks and with recent good weather has been able to quite a lot of work done. Susie will also be meeting with the CPD, Forestry Dept. to look into new trees to replace the missing trees in front of the Henry Horner Monument.
Park Briefs: Teddy Kuhlman, and Dale Marie Grandys, North Region Supervisor, were representing the Horner Park Staff and CPD.
Horner Park: A recently discovered hornets nest located behind the east side of the field house was removed. Several Gypsy Moth cocoons were reported to be infesting the Crabapple trees located on the east side of the hill. Dale Marie Grandys will contact the Forestry Dept. to have them removed. The identification tags for the Nature Garden have recently been installed. Dale Marie Grandys will look into correcting the pooling of water on the Montrose tennis courts. As the courts are being heavily used with the newly added lighting this may be very beneficial to our tennis players. The council discussed the illegal parking situation which is a constant problem in the employee parking lot located on the north side of the field house. The council suggested the installation of new and additional signage posting the area as employee parking only. Dale Marie Grandys will look into this possibility. Teddy Kuhlman presented the council with a brochure for a flag pole that the council has been forever proposing. Members of the council will peruse the brochure in hopes of finally realizing this goal.
Ravenswood Manor Park: Dale Marie Grandys reported that next week the CPD will be spreading the requested dirt around the new planters located at the north end of the park on Manor Ave. The on going discussion regarding the street light located in the lawn area will be tabled until a definitive plan is reached by the council.
Buffalo Park: The leaking buffalo box will be fixed on September 4, 2003.
Jacob Park: No report
Sunken Garden Park: Recently the CPD spread mulch in the garden beds.
Horner Park Riverbank Initiative: No report
Adjournment: Jerry Giese moved to adjourn the meeting. All agreed .Jerry thanked those in attendance and the meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
