Announcements: HPAC would like to acknowledge the passing of two family members of the council. Alan Mueller lost his father to a prolonged illness and Jerry Giese’s mother-in-law also passed away recently. HPAC will forward memorial gifts as requested by the families. This years Horner Park Pumpkin Patch will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2001. On October 31, 2001 Horner Park will be holding their annual Halloween Party which will include candy and a costume judging contest. The fall programs will be starting September 17th.
Horner Park Advisory Council Business: A letter including an invoice for the July2001-July 2002 Horner Memorial Garden grant will be sent out. As there were no reported complaints regarding any of the sports groups using Horner Park the Chicago Park District has renewed all of their permits including Horner Park Baseball Association and Gordon Tech’s Athletic Department. Anne Rozmin motioned to make funds available to replace a memorial tree at Buffalo Park. All agreed.
Garden Committee: Presented by Susie Novak. Susie will be putting in 10-15 hours per week through late fall. Elaine suggested to have Susie put together a fall schedule to determine her expenses through December 2001.
Concert Committee: Presented by Larry Brown. For the final concert of the year there will be seven acts during the Talent Show portion of the evening followed by a paid performance of folk singers. It was noted that a total of $ 178.82 in donations were collected at Manor Bash 2001.
Park Briefs: Theresa Brown and Dale Marie Grandys were in attendance representing the Horner Park Staff.
Horner Park: Preceding this September HPAC meeting, a disturbance at the basketball courts required the police to respond and make several arrests. We will look forward to hearing from the Horner Park staff on how the police have responded to our request to get Chicago Police Department bike patrols back in the parks. Many of the softball games have been rained out. The league is considering extending their season. Dale Marie Grandys thanked the Council for a letter, that had been sent to CPD headquarters, thanking them for the help and dedication of the Horner Park staff during our Manor Bash. The on going water problem, which is contributing to the lack of working water fountains in Horner Park is still being reviewed by an architectural firm. This firm has been hired by the CPD to come up with a plan of action, as a massive rework of the entire water system in the park looks inevitable. The fencing currently in place on the east side of hill will remain up until a plan is approved. It was also mentioned that Jesus House who had recently held a picnic at Horner Park will not be receiving their deposit back due to their failure to abide by the rules of the CPD. There were cars driven onto park property and a failure to properly dispose of their trash. Dale Marie Grandys also reported that a Christmas concert is being worked on, which will hopefully include performances by Franz Bentler or Bill Porter.
Ravenswood Manor Park: The stone walkway was installed in the wildlife garden. Anne would like to have several volunteers to add new soil to the garden on Saturday, September 8, 2001 at 9:00am. There is still no word when the donated stone, for the border, is coming.
Buffalo Park: No report
Horner Park Riverbank Initiative: No report.
Adjournment: Anne Rozmin thanked all those in attendance and the meeting was adjourned at 9:10p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Larry Brown
