Horner Park Advisory Council
Meeting Minutes
Larry Brown, as President, presiding, called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. Kevin Anderson acted as Secretary for this meeting. See roster below for attendance.
Previous Minutes: The minutes of the February 4, 2008 meeting were distributed and approved as amended.
Treasurer’s Report: John Lyman distributed the JPMorgan bank statements showing $5,455.32 in checking, $33,422.20 in savings, for a total of $38,877.52. The Form 1099 for Susie Novak and Form 1096 for the IRS were sent out. All proceeds for the January baseball clinic were received, and all expenses have been paid. Tom McManamon will send an email and follow-up with downtown on the issue making sure that the funds raised for programs in our parks, such as the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program, stay in the park.
Announcements: The Valentine’s Day Daddy/Daughter Dance was great with attendance of around 150. The Doggie Easter Egg Hunt is set for March 22. Spring registrations went very well. Tom is working on staging a segment of a Midwest baseball tournament for kids ages 9-16 at Horner Park during June. The $1000 Seed Grant from Friends of the Park was approved and will go towards new tumbling mats. Earth Day cleanup will be on April 19.
Concert Committee: Tom says Friday night programming for Horner Park will be Ok; he is working on getting a movie too. There are new people and new ideas this year. The flyers will be ready in two weeks. No word from the RMIA about working with them.
Garden Committee: Susie will not be on payroll until May. A budget breaking down the work by park will be prepared this year; Tom will get us the schedule when it becomes available.
Web Site: No report.
Volunteer Committee: September is the new timeframe for the mixer. John Lyman and Thadeus Kosmider are working on getting our bank to sponsor it.
Park Briefs:
Horner Park: The goal for the little fieldhouse is to have all work completed before the season starts. Tom is working on getting more field mix for the athletic fields and is looking for donations for grass seed. Last year 2100 permits were issued between April 1 and November 20. The grasses in the front walk will be cleaned-up by CPD. No news on the parking lot or the underbridge connector.
Ravenswood Manor Park: John O’Connell scraped off the sticker and added a sign to deter any further vandalism. John O’Connell will call about the cork board on the kiosk on the Francisco L platform. The storm fencing will be keep up at least until May. Continuation of the twig fence will be an Earth Day task.
Jacob Park: Tom mentioned the possibility of modernizing the playground.
Buffalo Park: Chris Gent is expected to already have the design formalized for the people downtown to sign-off on before putting out to bid. It was suggested that the Manor Garden Club plant sale, which is usually in Buffalo Park, can be moved to Manor Park.
Sunken Garden Park: The parkway water leak has been repaired.
Flagpole: No report.
Baseball: Horner Park Baseball Association has allocated $3000 for improving Horner Park. Registrations are going well.
Bylaws: The executive committee has scheduled another meeting on March 10 to continue to review the bylaws.
Other business: None.
New Business: Stuart Brody introduced himself and brought concerns and questions about the need for gates for the fencing near the playlot in Ravenswood Manor Park.
Ralph Conception of Ravenswood Event Services introduced himself and proposed staging a two-day cornhole tournament in Horner Park in August. The first step in the process will be a meeting with Tom.
The meeting adjourned at 9:25 PM.
Next meeting: The next regular HPAC meeting will be held Monday, April 7 at 7 PM at Horner Park.
