Meeting Minutes

Larry Brown – President, presiding, called the meeting to order at 7:35 PM. Peter Schlossman acted as Secretary for this meeting. The meeting was held at Sunken Gardens. See roster below for attendance.

Previous Minutes: The minutes of the June 2010 meeting were approved with comments noted.

Treasurer’s Report: The following funds are in HPAC accounts: $4,735.99 – Checking, $15,642.70 -Savings, $3,933.52 – Paypal. Total Funds = $24312.21. There are two checks outstanding, one for baseball clinic t-shirts, and one for the Ceriale memorial plaque that Larry Brown has yet to submit receipts for. The bank balances are reconciled with HPAC books.

A motion to allow Kevin Anderson to switch bank accounts to an alternate bank of his discretion was made, seconded and approved.

Council Business: Larry Brown expressed his desire to step down as president. Election of officers is held on October. A slate of candidates is needed by September’s meeting. Peter Schlossman & John O’Connell are sitting on the nominating committee.

Announcements: Horner Park Pumpkin Patch is scheduled for Oct. 2 A petting zoo and hayrides are expected to be back this year.

A budget meeting for Chicago Park District is scheduled for July 20 at Horner Park. Jacobs Playlot funding may be an issue for HPAC to discuss at that meeting.

Friends of the Parks is having an event Sept. 14 for Dr. Brian Traubert, CPD’s new superintendent.

Concert Committee: Attendance at the concerts has been great this year. 400-500 attended the movie night at Horner Park, and over 200 came out for last weekend’s concert. Concerts are scheduled through August.

Garden Committee: No report

Web Site: No report.

Volunteer Committee: No report.

Park Briefs:

Horner Park: All targets for camp attendance were met. All camps were filled to capacity. Instructors are doing a good job and feedback from public has been good. A group of Burmese refugees sponsored by the Heartland Alliance are working at Horner Park doing riverfront cleanup.

Some drinking fountains were not functioning and Tom McManamon has work order in to repair them.

Picnickers without permits were reported. July 4th fireworks were quiet this year.

Ravenswood Manor Park: A leaking water main was fixed at Eastwood. John O’Connell got a water permit to use the hydrant, and cleaned tagging that was found in the park. Tom McManamon asked Bogdan to plant the diamond planter but will cancel that since other volunteers already planted that.

Jacob Park: Jacob Playlot Neighbors are meeting the day of this meeting. Larry Brown asked the group to report back to HPAC. They are planning a concert fundraiser at Jacob Playlot in September.

Buffalo Park: Weeds were reported to be growing between the pavers. A new sign was installed and looks great. Water was ponding in the parkway.

Sunken Garden Park: HPAC will gather emails from the Ravenswood Gardens Homeowners Association members so they can be informed of our upcoming meetings.

Other business: John Bernbom proposed sending a letter to CPD, with a cc: to Andre Taylor, regarding HPAC’s position on liability for events carried out for the benefit of CPD. HPAC should research options regarding insurance and potential exposure of advisory councils with regard to their actions and business.

The bill for the funding of the riverfront project is not out of committee yet. HPAC to follow up with Congressman Quigley’s office and the Army Corps of Engineers.

Flagpole Project: The flagpole installation could begin as soon as July 19 however a strike is preventing work from starting. Russ at Christy Weber expects construction to only take two days. An August dedication is possible if there is no delay due to the strike. HPAC needs to fund +/- $1,500 to meet the construction budget. Larry Brown requested fencing around the site to allow grass to take.

Vegetable Garden committee: No report.

New Business: None

The meeting adjourned at 9:00 PM

The next regular HPAC meeting will be held Monday September 13 at 7:00 PM at Buffalo Park.
