Elaine reported that the Illinois Preservation Agency Fund has not yet been spent. The council will evaluate this and see what further needs the Henry Horner Monument and Garden will need. Further discussion on this fund will take place once a response is received from the agency on the most recent application.
Announcements: Anne Rozmin reported several council members attended a CPD, North Region, budget meeting held at the McFedridge Sports Complex on July 23, 2003. Our representation reminded the CPD of the importance of several of our projects. The Horner Park Riverbank Improvement, ADA accessibility at Horner Park, inadequate staffing and bathroom reconstruction were mentioned by the council representatives. John O’Connell brought to the council’s attention the controversial proposal to add more dockage in Monroe Harbor. Anyone interested can contact the Friends of the Park.
Council Business: In regard to the current compensation payed per hour to Susie Novak for her gardening duties by the HPAC, Elaine Taylor moved to have HPAC pay Susie Novak, as compensation, the difference between what the CPD pays her per hour and the agreed upon amount of $11.00 per hour. This difference in hourly pay will continue to be payed through December 31, 2003 by HPAC. Alan Mueller seconded and the motion was passed unanimously. The council would like to invite Mary Van Haften to the September council meting to discuss the Horner Park Nature Garden plant tags and the auguring project needed at Ravenswood Manor Park.
Concert Committee: ManorBash 2003 has been booked and all preliminary scheduling has been started. ManorBash being held on August 10, 2003 will begin at 10:45 AM to accommodate the large number of acts booked for the day. The acts are as follows:10:45-11:15 Undefined, 11:15-12:00 Sims & Novak, 12:00-1:45 The Chicago Bluegrass Band, 2:00-3:00 Teddi and Fred Koch and the Lil’ Cow Band, 3:15-5:15 Aswah Greggori & the Enforcers, 5:30-7:15 Big Ed & the Cydecos, 7:30-9:00 Michael McDermott. The CPD is providing the sound system and the Lil’ Cow Band, along with a climbing wall from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Of course plenty of hotdogs, chips, lemonade and this year hamburgers will be provided by the CPD. Terry Sweeney has arranged for two CPD employees to help work at the food table.
Garden Committee: Susie Novak reported that she has recently been able to plant some donated plants at Jacob Playlot. The Henry Horner Monument garden is being weeded when weather allows. At Ravenswood Manor Park she has been weeding the wildlife garden. Due to a lot of rain Susie has had difficulty finding days to weed. Also the new planters along Manor Ave. at Ravenswood Manor Park will need to be filled with potting soil and planted whenever some volunteers would have time. Anne Rozmin asked Susie to provide an accounting for where and for how long she is spending at each park location garden.
Park Briefs: Terry Sweeney, Park Supervisor and Dale Marie Grandys, North Region Supervisor, were representing the Horner Park Staff and CPD.
Horner Park: New flashing stop signs have been installed at all of the park entrances along California Ave. Water shut off valves will begin being installed in all CPD parks. Dale will look into when our parks will have the new devices.
Ravenswood Manor Park: The buttress located on the east side of the play lot was reinforced to keep it from leaning further away. New planters were placed along Manor Ave. near the point of Manor and Francisco Aves. Soil and regrading will need to be performed to allow for planting. Auguring of the area on the east side of the play lot has not been scheduled yet. The council would like Dale to inform Mary Van Haften that we would be interested in the next time that she would be evaluating this area. John O’Connell would like the CPD to look into replacing the sidewalks near the pergola. John will now follow up with a letter to Roger Kronow laying out the need for replacement. The council also brought up the need to remove or replace the street light which stands in the middle of the grass area. The light blinks and really isn’t required for lighting in the park anymore.
Buffalo Park: The buffalo box is leaking. Anne and Larry will attempt to fix first before Terry will have the CPD Maintenance Department investigate.
Jacob Park: No Report
Sunken Garden Park: No Report
Horner Park Riverbank Initiative: It was noted that at the recent CPD Budget meeting Roger Kronow was very polite and encouraging when talking to the council members in regard to the HPRI. The council members took this as a sign of good things to come for the project.
Adjournment: Anne Rozmin moved to adjourn the meeting. All agreed Anne thanked those in attendance and the meeting was adjourned at 9:25 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Larry Brown
