Horner Park Advisory Council
Meeting Minutes
Jerry Giese, President, called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Larry Brown acted as secretary for this meeting.
Previous Minutes: It was determined that there will be no February Minutes. March Minutes were approved unaminously.
Treasurer’s Report: Elaine Taylor delivered the Treasurer’s report.
The balances are as follows:
- Checking Account: 4,300.03
- Savings Account: 4,149.90
- CD’s 0
- Totals $ 8,449.93
Council Business: Elaine provided a break down of all funds. General, Henry Horner Memorial Garden, Concerts and Buffalo Park Council Ring. The council will need to determine at a later date on the best ways increase revenue to bring each of these projects to completion in the future. All projects at this time are too under funded to proceed with.
Announcements: Elaine Taylor and John O’Connell both attended the award ceremony for Dale Marie Grandys and Anne Rozmin. This Earth Day on Saturday, April 24th John O’Connell, Friends of the Parks, will be the cleanup supervisor at Manor Park. Elizabeth Kelly, Friends of the Parks, will be presiding over Horner Park’s Earth Day cleanup event. Mayor Daley is sponsoring Green and Clean in the Chicago Parks on May 1st. The Friend s of the Chicago River is sponsoring Chicago River Day on Saturday, May 8th. John O’Connell will be supervising at Horner Park. Friday April 9th will be the Easter Egg Hunt at Horner Park for children 3-6 years old. On Saturday, April 10th Horner Park will hold a first for the CPD. The CPD is holding a Doggie Easter Egg Hunt. For a fee of $ 5.00 dog owners are invited to attend a morning of activities including the doggie treat hunt, story time and photos. Area pet suppliers will also be on hand to provide samples and grooming tips. Scooby Doo is said to be going.
Concert Committee: No Report
Garden Committee: Susie Novak reported that the Henry Horner Garden Cleanup was not well attended and she will be continuing to cut back the grasses there for some time as it is very difficult.
Park Briefs: Terry Sweeney, Horner Park Supervisor, and Dale Marie Grandys, North Region Supervisor, were present and representing the Horner Park Staff and CPD.
Horner Park: Summer Registration began last week and classes are filling fast. Online registration, although slow, did work well. Horner Park is hosting a new camp this year, Theater/Music Camp. With the support of local theater companies children will be exposed to this wonderful world of stage performance. The council wishes to work closer with the baseball and softball leagues to better guide any future field improvements.
Baseball Fields: The CPD has added new dirt on the fields in hopes of filling in some of the many dips and valleys on the fields.
Ravenswood Manor Park: The CPD is adding a new activity for Manor Park, Story Telling. On June 26th at 5:00 pm there will be a CPD story time on the lawn. This will be an all ages program and is hoped to be a little scary.
Buffalo Park: The flower pots were cleaned and rose bushes trimed.
Jacob Park: The new plants that had been planted in the fall were discussed. This park was heavily planted last fall.
Sunken Garden Park: None.
Horner Park Riverbank Initiative: None
