  • Savings Account: 1,901.24

Announcements: Due to a low turnout for the Horner Park garden cleanup, a second date was scheduled on Saturday, April 7, 2001. The date for the Manor Park cleanup was again announced for Saturday, April 21, 2001. The Nature Chicago official “Calendar of Events” was distributed and is available at the Horner Park field house. This brochure contains a city wide listing of events to be held April-June, 2001. A Chicago Sun Times article was presented that was about the Chicago River. John O’Connell was going to write to the columnist, as he did not include the Horner Park River Initiative. Jake Peters, a local Boy Scout, will be working with our council on the new Manor Park wildlife garden, to fulfill his requirements for Eagle Scout. Good Luck Jake.

Horner Park Advisory Council Business: A letter to David Doig, General Superintendent, Chicago Park District, pertaining to the councils disapproval of the new trash receptacle policy being implemented this year by the CPD, was presented to the council for approval. All those in attendance approved the letter to be mailed. The importance of having all council members participate in any events that the council sponsors was discussed. Larry Hodak presented to the council the Chicago Wilderness book. Larry Hodak made a motion to have the council join its membership. Jerry Giese seconded the motion. All agreed. Anne Rozmin motioned to seek approval from the Chicago Park District, to insure that the council would be within the CPD advisory council guidelines before such an action would take place. Larry Hodak seconded it. All agreed.

Garden Committee: Susie Novak presented the Garden Committee Report. As mentioned previously, there was a very low turnout for the Horner Park Garden cleanup. A good turnout for
Manor Park cleanup will be required as several modifications to the gardens will be made. This will require transplanting many plants from their current location. Ann Rozmin has contacted Bob Porter to design a wildlife garden, to be located along the fence at Francisco St. and Eastwood Ave. in Manor Park. They plan to meet in the near future to discuss this plan.

Concert Committee: John O’Connell presented the Concert Committee Report. Collections from the spring mailing are starting to come in. John is pleased to announce many past donors and most importantly, new donors, are sending in donations. The committee hopes to work hard during the month of May to secure advertisers in the Manor Park Summer Concert Series Program.

Park Briefs: Mark Hebert was in attendance representing the Horner Park Staff.

Horner Park: Mark Hebert was informed that a bicycle is still attached to the fencing on the park grounds. Mark Hebert was to look into having Gordon Tech’s representatives contact the council to discuss having volunteers from Gordon Tech helping out with future park cleanup dates. There will be a craft mobile at Horner Park during the Summer Camp program. This will allow children access to the regular craft programs throughout the Chicago Park District’s field houses. The grass is scheduled for seeding this spring.

Ravenswood Manor Park: The bicycle at Manor Park has been removed. The council thanked those responsible at CPD. The concrete slab for the Job box at Manor Park should be installed soon. The new flower box for Manor Park will be installed by June, as maintenance on park benches must be completed first. New circuit breakers for the Pergola have been ordered and should be in installed soon. We are also hopeful that an additional electrical hookup will be installed at the same time. Mark Hebert was to have the graffiti on the playground equipment and pergola removed. A quick response clean up kit located in the new job box was suggested. Mark was reminded to have the CPD address the poor condition of the sidewalks in and around Manor Park. The council recommended that the CPD work with Chicago Streets and Sanitation to resolve this stagnant issue. A problem with standing water on the Manor Ave. side of Manor Park was brought to the attention of the council. Mark was going to ask that Terry Sweeney have someone evaluate what needs to be done to correct this problem.

Buffalo Park: The concrete planters for Buffalo Park are placed on a purchase order at the CPD.

Horner Park Riverbank Initiative: A meeting with State Congressman John Fritchey is being arranged with Ann Rozmin and Mike Emerson to discuss state financing for the HPRI on April 10th, 2001. An update from Wayne Kawolski, at Army Corp. of Engineers, revealed that the HPRI plans have passed the “in-house” review and is now being reviewed by the Midwest Division. This next level should take 6-8 weeks. Larry Hodak suggested that the council pay close attention to the North Side Prep riverbank project as it is implemented over the summer. The council may gain valuable insight into how the HPRI project will move forward.
