Barmey is a Cambodian-American teacher, composer, guitarist, and mixed-media artist currently residing in Chicago, IL. Barmey decided to go to University of Miami, FL with a partial scholarship. There he studied classical guitar performance and music composition. He’s been very lucky to play guitar all around the world in festivals and other recitals. In his composition work, he’s collaborated with the Cleveland Orchestra, University of Wisconsin Madison’s Javanese Gamelan, Chicago Opera Vanguard, and New York University. He has been commissioned to write music for the Gaudete Brass Quintet, Avanti Guitar Trio, Bach and Beethoven Ensemble, and Midwest Philharmonic Children’s Orchestra. Barmey also produces music under the name Kmang Kmang, with which he has released his first studio album Drifting. Drifting is a collaboration between violin, drums, classical guitar, some vocals, and electric and string bass. The music has been described as a classical, world, rock hybrid. Kmang Kmang is in the process of releasing its second album, and EP called Banga. Banga mixes the intricate melodies of Drifting with uplifting electro-acoustic and indie rock influences.
Kmang Kmang performs Friday, July 11th at 7pm, with Tim Session opening.
